History

During the mid 1880 a US Army Chaplain by the name of Winfield Scott was impressed by the beauty and potential of the Salt River Valley so in 1888 he returned with his wife and purchased 640 acres of land for $3.50. Together with his brother, George Washington Scott, they became the first inhabitants of Orangedale, the original name of the town because of the many citrus fruits planted by the brothers over the years.  The brothers recruited other settlers mostly from the East and Midwest and in 1894; the town’s name was changed to Scottsdale in honor of its founder.  Incorporated in 1951, the city has grown from a small farming community to Arizona’s 6th biggest city with many affluent residents and prime real estate.
