BRAIN INJURY

Traumatic brain injury can be characterized as an injury to the brain caused by an external force (acceleration, deceleration, and rotational) relative to the skull. These external forces can cause compression, shearing, and displacement of the brain, leading to damage or destruction. Injury to the brain can be focal or localized to the area of the brain where the force was concentrated. Injury can also be diffuse or wide spread, as a result of tissue shearing and reduced blood flow to the brain. Depending on the severity, traumatic brain injury can result in significant physical, cognitive, and behavior deficits. Specific impairments include:

  • Abnormal muscle tone Reduced fine motor control
  • Uncoordinated movements
  • Impaired postural control
  • Disequilibrium
  • Sensory abnormalities or loss
  • Altered levels of consciousness or alterness
  • Poor Attention
  • Impaired Memory
  • Disinhibition
  • Impulsiveness
  • Physical and verbal aggreiveness
  • Sexual inappropriateness
