The term Functional Movement Disorder refers to a common neurologic condition that can be characterized a disturbance in the normal functioning of brain with respect to how it communicates with the body, rather than damage or disease. Individuals living with a Functional Movement Disorder can present with a wide variety of debilitating impairments including:
- Tremor
- Weakness
- Difficulty walking
- Incoordination
- Abnormal muscle tone
- Pain
- Impaired sleep
- Sensory disturbances
- Dysregulated heart rate or blood pressure
Physical and occupational therapy have been shown to be very effective in helping individuals with FMD achieve a full recovery. The therapist at ANR will use their expertise and knowledge of FMD to develop an individualized plan of care. A holistic approach to care is necessary given the global impairments often seen with FMD.
