How to Combat Summer Fatigue: Tips for Keeping Your Energy Up

For many, summer is a time to let loose, take some time off work, and soak up the sunshine. But the heat and longer days can make some of us feel more drained than energized. Summer fatigue is very real, and low energy levels can keep you from making the most of the season.

Luckily, there are a few simple ways to stay refreshed and fight off any summertime sluggishness. So, let’s look at some fun, easy tips to keep your energy levels high all the way to autumn!

Hydrate Like a Pro: Stay Cool, Stay Energized

One of the biggest causes of fatigue in the summer is dehydration. When you sweat more, your body loses fluids, leading to low energy.

While hydration needs vary by individual, you generally want to aim for 12-16 cups a day–although keep in mind that a portion of that will come from food intake, not just fluids. Here are a few tips to stay hydrated:

  • Keep a water bottle handy to make it easy to drink water throughout the day
  • Infuse your water with cucumber, citrus slices, or fresh herbs for a refreshing twist. (At Advanced Neurologic Rehabilitation, we love making mojito water with lime and mint.)
  • Eat water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and strawberries
  • Start your day with a glass of water to kickstart hydration early

Move Your Body: Exercise for an Energy Boost

Regular exercise increases energy levels by releasing endorphins, your body’s natural energy boosters. However, it can be hard to get active in the heat. Here are some tips to help you move your body without overheating:

  • Schedule your workouts in the morning or evening when it’s cooler
  • Try water-based activities like swimming or water aerobics
  • Skip the gym and follow along to video workouts at home–that way, you never have to leave the air conditioning

Nourish Your Body: Eat Light and Eat Right

Heavy meals can leave you feeling sluggish, especially in the summer heat. Instead, focus on lighter meals packed with nutrients to fuel your energy levels. You might also try eating smaller but more frequent meals, which can help keep your energy steady throughout the day.

Some tips for summer eating:

  • Choose fresh, seasonal produce, such as tomatoes, eggplants, avocados, or melons
  • Snack on nuts, seeds, or fresh fruit for a quick energy boost
  • Avoid ultra-processed foods like chips, candy, and soda, which can sap your energy

Prioritize Rest: Sleep Better to Feel Better

Sleep is crucial for maintaining energy levels, but summer’s long days and warm nights can sometimes disrupt your rest. Prioritizing good sleep hygiene can make all the difference.

Here’s how to improve your sleep:

  • Create a cool, dark sleep environment with blackout curtains and a fan or air conditioning
  • Stick to a consistent bedtime routine, which helps regulate your sleep cycle
  • Limit screen time before bed, as the blue light from phones and TVs can interfere with your sleep quality.

Keep Summer Fun and Fatigue-Free

Summer is a time to enjoy yourself, and we hope these energy-boosting tips help you make the most of the sunny days without feeling drained.
